Rajahmundry to be called with its original name Rajamahendravaram

Rajahmundry shall henceforth be called with its ancient name "Rajamahendravaram", which was named after the Chalukya king, Sri Raja Raja Narendra who reigned around 1022 AD.

Since British found it difficult to pronounce, they changed the name of "Rajamahendravaram" to Rajahmundry. In 2015, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has said the town of Rajahmundry in East Godavari district will get back its historical name of Rajamahendravaram.

Chandrababu Naidu strongly believes that the original name of Rajahmundry could rejuvenate to shape up the city as modern hub for tourists and also provide consistent jobs locally.
